New Flash: Overstock Terminates Its California Affiliates
It happened. We just received an e-mail from Commission Junction, Overstock’s affiliate network, informing us that we have been terminated from its affiliate program (see below). Note that CJ’s policies require a one-week notice so I assume that Overstock is sending a message to state legislators that this is what will happen should they enact AB1625 into law. [Note: I cannot find any information that would show that AB1625 was passed by either house of the California Legislature.]

Google has handed down yet another hefty punishment to a major retailer. This time the offender, Overtstock.com. Overstock.com is certainly not new to controversy with the numerous lawsuits, SEC investigations and only having turned a profit for the first time in April 2010. The punishment is a crushing blow to their rebranding efforts from started in January of this year from Overstock.com to o.co. Though we have not heard too much about the rebrand in recent weeks. Google Punishes Overstock.Com for Violating Guidelines The violation is quite different from JC Penny as reported by Amir Efrati in the Wall Street Journal as Overstock.com has not denied that they targeted college and university students and faculty by offering a 10% discount if they embedded links for certain keywords whereas JC Penny has vehemently denied having any knowledge of the black hat SEO practice of their then SEO firm.

Matt sent us an update after following through with his complaint to the Better Business Bureau. Overstock.com called me early this morning, and, without quarrel, offered me an additional $80 on my refund, thus bringing the original $93 offset to $13 and change, an amount I could live with. I can’t help but wonder whether it was overstock’s consciencious return policy in responding to my online query yesterday, or as a result of my BBB complaint I also filed yesterday. The agent left a message on my machine, with instructions to call a number and ask for him by name, it makes me wonder if this is standard procedure or if the BBB lit a fire under them. Either way, I consider my matter resolved. The co domain is hot�� at least from a marketing perspective. GoDaddy and others have run large television campaigns (including during the Super Bowl) to promote the new domain. I have no data to suggest that the co domains are gaining traction (although I suspect that is not the case). The first major co move? Overstock.com which is rebranding themselves as O.co. It will be interesting to watch whether they gain branding / marketing traction with the move (again, I suspect that will not be the case). It is an interesting / bizarre move considering that Overstock is already a prominent brand and advertising efforts around a rebrand are challenging�� no matter how short or clever the new domain is. This ad, which is currently running in prim time television, is proof: the spot is focused on explaining the rebrand while reinforcing the core brand qualities��. tough, confusing and probably not worthwhile
